Tribute to Councillor Ian Block, at the beginning of the full Council meeting – Thursday 12th December 2019.
The Mayor, Graham Steady, welcomed everyone to the meeting including ex-Councillors and ex-Mayors. He said that with all the speech’s he has to make as Mayor, this is one he did not expect he would have to make, but unfortunately circumstances have dictated. He then gave a tribute to Councillor Ian Block, as follows:-
“Ian was elected during 2007, in an election which heralded a major change in the make up of this Town Council. He was Town Mayor twice, Chairman of the Finance Committee, a member of the Planning Committee and Chairman of the Springmead Trust. Ian liked a good debate, and he did so with wit and a twinkle in his eye, and a dry sense of humour. Now whether he won or lost a debate he was always the first to say “are we going for a drink?”, which I wholeheartedly agreed with. Ian will be greatly missed by us all, not just for being a good Councillor, but for being a good man. His opinions and guidance will not be forgotten and will hold this Council in good stead.” The Mayor then invited everyone to stand, and make a toast to “Councillor Ian Block”.
