Action is underway to have travellers evicted from publicly owned land in Brightlingsea.
Five tents have been pitched on a car park in the town in Promenade Way which is owned by Brightlingsea Town Council and operated by Tendring District Council (TDC). The group arrived on the site over the weekend and have said that it is their intention to stay until Thursday.
A TDC officer visited them on Monday morning, spoke with the travellers and then contacted Essex Countywide Traveller Unit (ECTU) to get the process of removing them from the land under way.
Paul Honeywood, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “We have passed all the details on to the ECTU for them to deal with the issue. We will be waiting for a report back from them once they have been out to speak to the travellers.
He added: “We fully understand peoples’ concerns and we are working with the ECTU and following the laid down procedures that need to be taken if we are to be successful and move the group on.”
The group are currently the only travellers in the Tendring area occupying publicly owned land.
