The Town Council is aware that questions are being asked about the Lido being closed in the recent hot weather. Due to financial constraints imposed by the government Tendring District Council have had to make cuts in services, and the reality is that the Lido would have been mothballed and scheduled for decommissioning this year if the Town Council had not negotiated with them to keep it open.

TDC is the current owners and managers of the Lido and have agreed it will open for a shortened season on July 15th for two months until September 9th. Following a series of public meetings in our town since April a group of community volunteers have established the Brightlingsea Lido Action Group. BLAG is committed to supporting the pool this year and developing a strategy for keeping it open in years to come. The group have meetings scheduled at the parish hall on July 13th and August 31st to take their work and planning forward. The Group is being chaired and supported by Cllr Mick Barry and has the full backing of the Town Council.

Please would everyone in the town support the Lido as far as they can this year. Entry on the opening day – 15th July from 10am – is FREE and there will be a number of events, races and fun things for children to do. If you don’t want to swim (or if the weather isn’t too kind) please come along and register your interest and support, and find out more about the Lido Action Group. Also on the day there will be an exhibition of old photos and articles about the Lido, which has been open since 1933. Please come and share your memories and help to develop its heritage history.

If we can demonstrate significant support in the town this will help in future negotiations and any applications for funding.

 Cllr Mick Barry
