For the second year running, Brightlingsea’s Bayard Recreation Ground has won awards from the Essex Playing Fields Association:

• Silver Award – Certificate of Merit – Class 1 – Playing Fields serving a population of 2,500 or more
• Certificate of Merit – Class 4 – Cricket grounds on which a winter game may or may not be played
• Gold Award – Certificate of Merit – Class 6 – For the best kept football pitch

Councillor Steady, Member with Special Responsibility for Amenity areas and Allotments, said:“Once again this is a well deserved accolade for the dedication of our Grounds Staff.  It is always nice to be recognised by people and groups from outside of our town.”

He added: “With careful planning we have been able to reverse years of under investment in our amenity areas. The maintenance programme which has led to us being recognised is only part of our overall plan – not only has the Council invested on behalf of the community, but also the user organisations have matched that commitment. The next major development will be the extension to the dressing rooms, which will enable cricket and football games to be played at the same time at certain times of the year, and ladies teams will be able to be accommodated.   All this has been achieved within existing budgets therefore it has not been necessary for the community tax to be increased.
