Four retail units in the Brightlingsea Marina development – which have stood empty for more than eight years – are to be turned into new homes.

Tendring District Council has approved the conversion to one one-bedroom home and three-two bedroom homes, which includes removing the shop fronts and putting in new openings, soft landscaping and private amenity areas. There will be eight parking spaces provided for the four units.

According to the council, there has been little interest in the retail units despite extensive marketing, and it felt that the retail space provided with the scheme is already above what is required locally. TDC’s Regeneration Team accepted the changes due to the considerable amount of marketing that had been carried out without success.

Brightlingsea Town Council supported the application, the Environment Agency removed its original objections and Essex County Council was satisfied with the parking arrangements. There were two letters of opposition from residents.
