Heritage Quay and Pier

Gone are the days when Brightlingsea Harbour was alive with the sight of fishing vessels landing their catches and barges discharging their cargoes. Today it is a much quieter place altogether with the eastern side of the Hard becoming somewhat neglected since the end of WW2, when the Royal Navy built a grid for MTBs to lay on for maintenance by marine engineers.

For many years desires have been expressed to see better use made of the area by creating an attractive waterside open-air multi-use community venue (the Heritage Quay) together with a pontoon for barges to tie up on (the Heritage Pier) bringing back this glorious sight to Brightlingsea.

Over the past few months a project team – jointly formed between Brightlingsea Town Council and Brightlingsea Harbour Commissioners – has been working on this, with the result that an ambitious plan is now being launched for public consultation. The three illustrative boards can be seen below (click to see a larger version) and are also on display in the Hard Shelter and in the New Street Library.

This is your town and we would greatly value feedback from residents on the project. Please address your questions and thoughts in writing to the Town Clerk at The Parish Hall, Victoria Place, Brightlingsea, Essex CO7 0BP  E-mail: townclerk@bseatc.org.uk.
