A modified popular free parking scheme in Tendring is to continue for a further three years – but with more restrictions.
Currently permits are sent out to all council tax-paying households across Tendring District, allowing allows free parking in all but two of the Council’s car parks after 11am each day.
From April it is expected to provide this through an opt-in procedure with virtual electronic permits. The permits will exclude July and August; additional permits allowed per household at a modest cost and special permit offers for the summer months. TDC also currently offers free after 3pm parking concessions to all car park users and this is to change to after 6pm.
TDC Leader Neil Stock told the meeting that the scheme had been a huge success so far. “The free parking has been a real support to our residents and businesses,” he added. “I am therefore pleased to include the relevant amounts in the budget that will see the scheme continue for a further three years. This not only sends out a positive message to our shops and businesses that we are supporting them but it is also a great way of encouraging our own residents to travel across the District and visit places they may not otherwise have gone to.”
The £221,000 required to pay for the initiative will come from the existing parking reserve.
