The plans of the Jubilee Committee (led by Brightlingsea Town Councillors) are progressing well for this important National event to be held in June 2012. It is hoped that on Sunday 3rd June a part of Brightlingsea’s celebrations for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee can be replicated. An excerpt from the July 1897 Parish Magazine reads:- “At 3pm a ‘muster’ was made on Hurst Green of all children of the Parish age 4-14 – the majority of older inhabitants turning out as well. A procession was led by Wyvenhoe Brass Band (1897 spelling) followed by members of the Urban District Council, The Mayor Deputy & Jurats, Ministers of Religion, Mr John Bateman, in Deputy Lieutenant uniform, Tradesmen of the town and the multitude of children (exact number 1066) a striking sight as they processed along the High Street, Victoria Place, Queen Street all houses gaily decorated to Bayard Recreation Ground. A good tea was spread all letting lose their appetites with trenchant effect followed by a long & varied programme of sports and entertainment including a greasy pole with a leg of mutton and a live pig for a catch-who-can-chase!” The present Jubilee Committee are again asking residents of all ages to ‘muster’ at Hurst Green @ 12 noon Sunday 3rd June 2012 adding to the fun by dressing up Victorian or 50’s, 60’s, 70’s etc style if they wish. It is hoped the Parade will also be led by a Band and followed by members of the Council, Officers of the Cinque Port Liberty, representatives from the town’s organisations particularly the Youth Groups and residents of all ages processing to the Recreation Ground following the 1897 route. Here everyone will be invited to join in the BIG JUBILEE LUNCH – an official part of the National Jubilee Celebrations, bringing with them their choice of lunch a simple or lavish spread to enjoy in the company of friends and neighbours! Entertainment will be provided throughout the day by the many extremely talented Brightlingsea drama and music groups including the young children. Free tea, coffee and soft drinks will be served, the aim being that this will be an enjoyable and memorable event, never to be repeated in the lifetime of anyone alive today. A Jubilee Ball is also being planned for the Saturday evening 2nd June. On Monday 4th June the town will be participating in the National Beacon Lighting Ceremony followed by a firework display at the paddling pool.
