Brightlingsea has been judged the Best New Entry in the Rural Community Council of Essex ' Best Kept Village Competition'. It was also runner up in Class 1, for villages of 5,000 - 10,000 population.

The competition is all about encouraging vibrant, enterprising and caring rural communities and the  judges were looking for villages which, irrespective of size, are doing most to enhance the quality of life for all inhabitants.

A committee was formed, consisting of:
Val Gilders – Chairman of Brightlingsea in Bloom
Darren Barrenger – Ex Mayor, and Ex Chairman of Community Reach
Karen Yallop – Councillor, responsible for Tourism
Marion Beckwith – Councillor
Graham Steady – Councillor, responsible for Youth and Amenity Areas
All were also Trustees of the Springmead Trust.
Brightlingsea was judged on the information it provided in a checklist style questionnaire, based around the four themes of Community, Business, Sustainability and Communications and the results of an inspection by judges marking on 20 categories.
